S2 Staff - Academics
Cadets on the S2 staff are responsible for guiding new cadets through the transition into college-level academics, connecting cadets with the many academic resources on post, and overseeing the peer-tutoring program for the Corps.
These individuals are selected each spring semester through a process called “rank applications,” which includes a series of interviews, military proficiency tests, and assessments to select a group of 4 officers, 6 sergeants, and 6 corporals well-suited for the Corps’ academic needs.

VMI maintains a number of offices and departments with faculty and staff focused on cadet academic achievement.
The Miller Academic Center focuses on the goal of academic success of the entire Corps, offering academic success workshops, group study sessions, and more.
Open Math Lab offers support for all cadets in mathematics courses, and is a service of the Mathematics Education and Resource Center (MERC).
While adhering to the Honor Code and Work-for-Grade policy, the Writing Center offers a variety of services to cadets, including professional and peer writing consultation and one-on-one writing process conferences.
The Office of Disabilities Services is committed to meeting ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure equitable educational access to cadets with documented disabilities.
The Cadet Athlete Development Office works to guide cadet-athletes to academic achievement by counseling on academic support services and assists with resumes, tutoring, and interview training.
Staff in the Office of Career Services provide resources and guidance in all aspects of career preparation, including career planning and resume preparation, career fairs and interviews, and job search best practices.
Academic advisors guide cadets through the exploration and clarification of their academic, career and life goals to help them develop skills and strategies that will contribute to their academic success and enable them to achieve a balanced engagement in co-curricular and academic activities.
- Group Study Session (GSS) cadet leader selection: Faculty and staff provide cadet recommendations for GSS cadet leaders.
- Group Study Session (GSS) faculty team members: Each GSS has a faculty member from the department for that course who serves as a resource both for the cadet leader(s) as well as the Miller Academic Center to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the GSS experience.
- Academic Saturday: (Primarily for 4th Class cadets, but others are invited to attend): Each session covers a topic related to cadet success. Please contact Kaye Taylor for dates and
additional details. - Cadet-Peer Tutoring: Cadets who have earned an A or B in a course and have received approval from department heads are eligible to tutor other cadets in that course. Please contact COL Jeff Kendrick for additional details.
The Office of Career Services is a great resource to explore internship and career options beyond the classroom. They host job fairs, offer resume guidance, and bring a variety of employers to post for cadets to meet.
The Office of Global Education oversees all study abroad programs at VMI, which include options for earning academic credit during the semester, over furloughs, and over the summer.
Project GO is offered through the Office of Global Education & the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. Funded by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education, it is a "nationwide program open to all qualified ROTC students offering fully-funded opportunities in critical language education, overseas study, and cross-cultural experience. "
The VMI Center for Undergraduate Research offers a number of program and opportunities, including the popular Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI), as well as funding for approved projects and conferences.
VMI provides Microsoft Windows Operating System and Office Suite software to current cadets free of charge. More information about software recommendations is available from Information Technology (IT).
IT also offers cadet computing support, computer lab access, and a Barracks Help Desk.

Extracurricular Opportunities
Members of the Corps of Cadets have many opportunities to expand their learning beyond the classroom, including in a variety of extracurricular clubs and activities.
Some examples include: Pre-Health Professions, EMT, Cyber Club, Cadet Investment Group, Psychology Club, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
