Board of Visitors

The Board of Visitors is the supervisory board of Virginia Military Institute. The Board defines the mission of the Institute as a public institution of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia and oversees the development, revision, and implementation of a strategic plan for the accomplishment of that mission.

The Board has 16 members, appointed by the governor of Virginia and subject to confirmation by the Virginia General Assembly. Of those members, four must be non-alumni, and 12 must be alumni. The four non-alumni must be residents of the Commonwealth. Four of the 12 alumni will be non-residents of the Commonwealth. The adjutant general of the Commonwealth of Virginia shall serve ex officio. A regular term of membership is four years. Members shall serve and be eligible for reappointment as provided by statute. Each year the Board appoints a cadet to serve as a non-voting, advisory representative to the Board.

The Virginia Military Institute Board of Visitors is conducting a meeting on 27 January to 29 January 2022 at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. Virginia Military Institute business will be discussed by the members in attendance. The meeting is open to the public.

Public Comment: Public comment will be taken on Saturday, 29 January 2022, between 8:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. The public can sign up to speak at the public comment session by contacting LTC Kevin Ryan at (540) 464-7132 (and/or ryanka@vmi.edu) no later than 4:30 p.m. on 25 January 2022. Each speaker is requested to limit comments to three minutes. A written copy of the comments is requested, but not required. Anyone who has not signed up to speak by the deadline may sign-in at the public comment session and, if time permits, will be given an opportunity to speak. Written comments may also be submitted up until 4:30 p.m. on 25 January 2022.

Finally, Board members will not provide comment, feedback or answer questions; however, every comment will be heard and considered. COVID-19 requirements and protocols, applicable as of listed meeting times, will be observed
