Hugh M. Fain III ’80 graduated with a degree in economics, with distinction. During his time at VMI, he was vice president of his class, a prosecutor on the Honor Court, and played lacrosse. He earned a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia Law School.

Fain is a member of Spotts Fain, a law firm in Richmond, Virginia, which focuses on advising, counseling, and representing businesses with interests in Virginia and beyond. He is a past president of the Richmond Bar Association and the Virginia Bar Association. He was named to four categories in Best Lawyers in America, and he was placed on the “Legal Elite” list of Virginia Business magazine.

He is a past president of the VMI Club of Richmond, was the president of the VMI Alumni Association from July 2000 to July 2002 and served on the VMI Foundation’s Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2011. He was reappointed to a second term on the board in 2012 and served as president of the VMI Foundation from July 2014 to July 2017.
