LEXINGTON, Va., July 18, 2023—The Superintendent regrets to inform the VMI community of the death of Col. Paul Douglas “Doug” Humphries, adjunct professor in the Department of International Studies and Political Science, July 13 after a battle with cancer.

Humphries came to VMI in 2019 after his 30-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency. He also retired as colonel with 30 years combined active and reserve duty with the U.S. Army. Despite his cancer diagnosis, he and his wife settled in Rockbridge County and built their dream home.

During the summer of 2022, Humphries mentored a Summer Undergraduate Research Institute project focused on U.S. intelligence. He was described as a professor who made the topic so exciting that it was impossible to lose focus.

He was a dedicated professional who loved teaching cadets, who was well-liked and respected by his colleagues, and whose expertise expanded the IS department's coverage of important security-related issues. He will be missed,” said Col. Dennis Foster, head of the Department of International Studies and Political Science.

His full obituary can be found here.
