LEXINGTON, Va., June 30, 2023—Gov. Glenn Youngkin has appointed Col. James Inman ’86, Lt. Col. Jim Joustra ’76, Rear Adm. Terence McKnight ’78, and Nancy Williams Phillips to four-year terms on the VMI Board of Visitors.

Inman lives in Moseley, Virginia, and is the director of planning and logistics with Afton Chemical Company. He received an English degree from VMI and, after his military career, served on post as chief of staff. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster and Purple Heart.

Joustra retired from the U.S. Army and currently resides in Orlando, Florida. He is the former director of mergers and acquisitions for Walgreens. He received a degree in biology from VMI and has served as a board member with the VMI Alumni Association on and off for approximately 20 years as a chapter president, regional director and director at large. 

From Fairfax Station, Virginia, and retired from the U.S. Navy, McKnight is the vice president of customer relations for CAES. After receiving a degree in history from VMI, his Navy career spanned over 30 years and he wrote a book, “Pirate Alley,” about his maritime experiences.  

Phillips lives in Blacksburg, Virginia, and is the president of Legacy Builders NRV, Inc., a small firm delivering custom homes. She oversees the design, pricing, customer relations, and subcontracting scheduling for the homes. She received her undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College.

Leaving the board are Lara Tyler Chambers ’03, Michael Hamlar, David Miller ’70, and Gene Scott ’80.

“I am excited to work with the new members and look forward to their contributions.” said Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins ’85, VMI superintendent. “Each individual brings a unique set of skills and experiences that will help us continue to move the Institute forward.”
