Working alongside the VMI admissions and financial aid offices, Aidan Carman ’27, an applied mathematics major, sought to determine what factors ultimately decide the likelihood a cadet will graduate, the likelihood a cadet will graduate in a particular major, the retention rate of cadets, and more.

Jonathan Tumwikirize ’24 wanted to gain firsthand experience in a military environment, while also getting his degree. It’s what drew him to Virginia Military Institute and allowed him to explore federal-civilian positions to pursue upon graduation.

“Having my brother here was definitely a perk,” Matthew said. “It was nice to know where I'm going to go, I already have a guaranteed friend. We were best friends growing up.” 

Abigail Basener '24 addressed plagiarizing and cheating concerns when it comes to the use of Artificial Intelligence during her thesis presentation, “Detecting AI-Generated Writing vs. Student Writing,” for VMI's Honor's Week.

Sebastian Ramirez ’24 became fond of the challenging lifestyle that came with attending Virginia Military Institute after attending an open house. He said the high standards that cadets endured on a daily basis was something he wanted.

Since 2013, VMI’s Department of Applied Mathematics has hosted events for area middle and high school students to work with faculty and cadets on problem-solving.

Maj. Sarah Patterson and Maj. Blain Patterson from the Department of Applied Mathematics had the privilege of accompanying 11 cadets as they presented their research on a variety of topics, ranging from identifying glycans with neural networks to women in counterterrorism.

As the 2018-19 academic year draws toward a close, so does the first year of VMI’s Math That Matters: Math for the Modern World, which was implemented this year as part of the Institute’s quality enhancement plan (QEP).
