Security Operations Center (SOC) Engineer/Analyst

The DoD-funded Cyber Defense Laboratory (CyDef Lab) at VMI is a conduit to grow a pathway of the next generation of cyber leaders. As such, students undergo rigorous education, with an emphasis in cybersecurity and leadership training in a dynamic, predictive, and responsive program. Integral to CyDef Lab is helping to build increased workforce diversity and providing extensive experiential learning with state-of-the-art tools and devices.

The CyDef Lab is looking for a Security Operations Center (SOC) Engineer/Analyst to join the team. As the Security Operations Center Engineer/Analyst in the CyDef Lab you will work under the guidance and supervision of the Security Operations Center Manager within the CyDef Lab.

The SOC Engineer/Analyst will take responsibility for our new Security Operation Center to serve as an educational laboratory for our students and to provide service to the community.

Key responsibilities and functions:

  • Responsible for the configuration, maintenance, tuning, and optimization of the Enterprise Security tools/platforms to assist with the general IT security, response to security threats from various platforms and technologies.
  • Monitor and analyze the event correlation and incident data to identify trends, false positives, and provide enhancements where necessary to improve the efficacy of the security alerts.
  • Assist in information security governance, risk, and compliance related tasks.
  • Mentor Cyber Captains in security and network operations.
  • Strong deliverable skills in writing, presentation of reports, and training of faculty, staff and cadets in security and network operations analytics.
  • Support security team operations in vulnerability risk assessments, data protection and integrity containments, and investigations on related security violations/incidents.
  • Work alongside server, network and desktop operation support and necessary stakeholders in effectively investigating and remediating incidents and security issues.
  • Ensures senior management and staff are informed of any changes and updates promptly.
  • Experience with log management or security information management tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proof of US Citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, or related areas.
  • Experience working in a Security Operations Center with knowledge of SOC operations.

Salary is based on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and benefits package. This position is fully funded by a DoD grant for the first two years and may be extended based on securing additional funds. This position is expected to be performed on-site.
